Defenders 013: Skeleton King

Congrats to ShogunPhone, and enjoy your Skeleton King.  Don’t forget to vote for tomorrow’s hero over in the comments at r/Dota2.  I’ll draw the suggestion with the most upvotes.

SK is a pretty vanilla hero, as far as I’m concerned, but what I do find interesting is his lore, and how that’s being handeled in Dota 2.

Most of you probably know this, but although his model comes from WC3, the character (King Leoric) comes from Diablo.  His Diablo counterpart even dropped a crown with lifesteal, so the Dota community borrowed more than just the name.  Because SK could stand for Skeleton King or Sand King, people usually called him Leo.  I wonder if that trend will continue, even though his name is Ostarion now…

Come to think of it, the item Buriza also has its roots in Diablo lore.   Buriza-Do Kyanon is Japanese transliteration of Blizzard Canon, which was a unique crossbow from Diablo II that dealt cold damage.  Cold damage?  Blizzard?  Get it?

Most of the Blizzard IP that has been re-imagined for Dota 2 has come from the Warcraft universe (Nature’s Prophet is an example of that), but these are the only two instances of cross-franchise IP that I can recall.

What do you think?  Are there any other Diablo references in Dota that are going to need to be censored out?

The Eaglehorn and Messerschmidt’s Reaver are weapons from Diablo2 that have been reimagined as well.

Dota2 features these weapons as an “Eaglesong” and the “Reaver” (or Reaver’s Axe in the comic).

I think its ironic that the old name ‘Eaglehorn’ in Dota1 used a picture of a bow, while the Eaglesong pictured in the comic is shaped like an actual blowing horn, yet retains the description of being a bow…

    Right on. Good finds, man.

Although, I looked up the Eaglesong, and the icon looks like the top of a recurved bow to me… Were they maybe using a different icon?

Not Diablo, but Lich’s name was changed as well since Kel’Thuzad is from Warcraft lore. I also wouldn’t expect Trall and Panderan Brewmaster to make it to Dota 2 as well.

Well, if Storm Spirit is any indication, he certainly won’t be a Pandaren…

I spend the days (and often nights) working as a field logger for a reality television show. Basically, I follow what’s happening on camera and then take notes on what I see. It’s a job that has me looking my computer screen quite a few hours a day.

Once I found your artwork I made my my background all of the defenders line, changing pics randomly every 5 seconds. I have found staring at my laptop hours on end a less daunting prospect ( it sounds like all complaints, but I do love my job) with all of the awesome artwork shifting in the background. Thank you for the great images and lightening my work day even just a little bit!

The icon does look like the top of a bow. It’d be easy to refine if they choose. Mind you, many more items deserve additional work with priority over the Eaglesong.

In the comic, the shorty picked up the Eaglesong (def a horn in this case) and stuffed it in his coat. This is all semantics of course. I’m starting to sound like the comic book guy.
