Defenders 023: Alchemist
December 8, 2011
EnvyUK (don’t we all?): here is your Alchemist.
A while back, I tried out League of Legends. I think I played maybe… three games in total, y’know, just to see what it was about (I could probably write another 5 posts about how… weird I found LoL). At any rate, one of the things that LoL does really differently than HoN/Dota are items and stats. I didn’t play much, but I do remember there being a “free gold” item. It’s called Avarice Blade, and it gives you 5 gold every 10 seconds, passively, for doing nothing. It basically pays for itself after ~11 minutes. I don’t really know if this item is actually used in LoL, but I do know that if you tried to implement something similar in Dota, people would freak. Out.
But then you have Alchemist. There are lots of heroes that can farm, and farm well, but I think Goblin’s Greed is the only skill in the game that can actually gives a gold advantage, all things being equal. And by that I mean, if you’re up against Alchemist, and somehow both of you are managing to last hit every creep (and no one is denying), Alchemist will just have more gold. It’s a strange skill mechanic that you don’t really see anywhere else.
I’m not really questioning whether Alchemist should have this skill or not, but pure farming skills (like Drow’s old ult) are pretty rare, and getting rarer. Dota players have always prided themselves on their ability to last hit/deny/farm, but do you think it’s time to add more options to make farming… well… easier?
