Defenders 029: Weaver

We’ve got Weaver today, as suggested by Zoolooman.  This guy has a weird colour palette, like a tropical fish.  I might have exaggerated it a bit, but he’s still surprisingly colourful.  You don’t notice it too much in game, because he’s much more subdued on top and away from the head, but in the model viewer he’s like a damn butterfly.

I want to talk about carries, and their role in the team dynamic.  There’s been a lot of bitching about the current hero pool, and how the limited selection allows Anti-Mage to out-carry just about anyone in the game.  We’ve all seen it happen, and it can be pretty frustrating.  Most people claim that we need Shadow Demon or Obsidian Destroyer to put the screws to a manta wielding Anti-Mage.

And maybe that is the case.  I don’t really remember AM being such a problem back in the day.  But I think the problem here is more general.  Often, especially at lower skill brackets, Dota devolves into a pissing contest; a war between carries to see who can carry the hardest/fastest.  But, the game doesn’t have to be played that way.  The obvious solution, in my opinion, is to change your team strategy.  Go for early game pressure, and roll straight into mid-game hard pushing.  End the game before that Anti-Mage (or whomever) becomes a whirling juggernaut (lol!) of destruction.

It doesn’t have to be about the carries, and I think sometimes people forget that.

All that said, there’s just something so satisfying about watching your carry reach that tipping point that makes him nigh unstoppable.  Or soul crushing, if you’re on the other end of his pointy stick.

    I’ve got to go with Faceless void. Nothing more satisfying than killing 5 heroes in a span of 5 seconds or less.

    You do have a point of not letting the other team’s carry not farm and be unstoppable by mid-late game. But you also have to consider that the opposing team can turtle and just let their carry farm and with AM having one of the best escape mechs in the game, he can just push tower and farm and hope that his team mates can defend until he can rape everyone.

    I kind of get why people say AM is fine and the hero pool is just lacking at the moment to counter him. But seriously, every time I see AM on a game I’m 70% that team is gonna win. It’s pretty boring to see, so I tend to avoid watching games with AM on Dota 2.

    My favourite anti-AM carries are Death Prophet and Drow. Both peak before AM does, both have a silence and Death Prophet can aid in pushing vs an AM team, ending the game early. Honourable mentions go to Doom.

    I liked Anti-Mage’s style from the dota 1 era. That’s why I love to play him, also his blink is quite nice.. There are enough players who can’t use him properly, since you can quite easily kill him early game with CC and some damage.

    But I also like Juggernaut because of his samurai-style, his spin and ult, which make him quite an ‘All-in’ hero for me. Slark is also fun to play and can excel quite good at ganking with his snare, which takes some practice to land from a distance. Also I find troll quite fun to play because of his ranged/melee modes.
